Ibn Taymiyyah
Shaykh ul-Islam Ahmad ibn Taymiyyah was born in the old Arabian city, Harran, in between Syria and Iraq. Due to the occupation of the Tartars, he and his family were forced to flee to Damascus. It seemed as if ibn Tamiyyah was destined to be a Scholar. He came from a family of well noted scholars; his father, his grandfather, as well as three of his brothers.
During his early studies of Islam, he constantly amazed his teachers with his amazing memory, keen intelligence, and depth of understanding. It is said he was permitted to give legal verdicts on Islam at the age of 19 and first began teaching at Dar al-Hadith as-Sukriyyah at the age of 22. His name was well known among his peers and throughout the Muslim world as he became highly respected as a Scholar and a Mujahid.
He always showed a great concern for the affairs and welfare of the Muslims and this showed during the Jihad against the Tartars, the Christians, and even the Rawafidah Shia’a. During this Jihad he displayed a great amount of bravery, courage, and was known to give inspiring talks which many said played a major part in the Muslim’s victory against their enemies. Aside from the physical Jihad, ibn Tamiyyah launched an intellectual struggle against the various deviant sects and heretical ideas of his time. He refuted the Rawafidah Shia’a, the Mu’tazilites, the Ashariah, the extreme Sufis, and any of those who came to challenge the doctrine of Islam.
It was due to this intellectual struggle against the enemies of Allah that he went through great trials and tribulations during his lifetime. Ibn Taymiyyah was constantly imprisoned for his views and his refutations of the heretics. However those who were close to him said that the imprisonments and the plots against him did not make him hesitate for a second to do what had to be done for the sake of Allah. One of his most famous students, ibn al-Qayyim, relates that ibn Taymiyyah once told him in regards to this plots against him….
“If they kill me it will be martyrdom for me. If they expel me, it will be migration for me; if they expel me to Cyprus, I will call its people to Allah so that they answer me. If they imprison me, it will be a place of worship for me”
(Nahiyah min Hayah Shaykh al-Islam, PG. 30)
Till this day he is praised by the Scholars of Islam and is hated by the enemies of Allah, indeed two testimonies of this man’s greatness. We present to you a collection of his most noted works that have been properly translated into English insha’Allah ta’alaa.
